"Set menu poor for vegetarians"

6.0

Booked for the early evening set menu. Disappointing menu options for vegetarian. Cauliflower soup for starter and cauliflower steak for main. Chef - please can you find some better options. No one wants cauliflower for starter and cauliflower for main course.

"Distinctly average"

6.0

A confused hotel which we found rather disappointing. The room itself was large but was strangely decorated and was too hot. The bed was a four poster but was incredibly small given the size of the room. The decor in the room was rather poor - certainly not luxurious. It had the feel of interior design for a large and impersonal chain. The corridors to the room were in a poor state of repair. Breakfast was fine but again had the impression that we were in a large chain. Parking the car was ridiculous. Surely it would be easier to tell guests to park in the large car park at the front rather than squeezing down an alleyway. Finally the price of our bed and breakfast was simply extortionate, certainly bearing in mind the overall mediocrity of the hotel. Finally, the price for what we received was extortionate. Ridiculously expensive

"Great hotel in a lovely town"

10.0

The Angel aspires to be an upmarket, high grade hotel and it succeeds. Perfectly placed in the centre of Bury Edmunds its inside matches its front facade. It's an old facility but well maintained and you get what you pay for. Parking might appear to be an issue except the guys on the reception desk do an amazing job switching vehicles around to ensure everyone is accommodated. Room was lovely, but old fashioned which means the modern day usb ports are lacking but the rest is fine. Breakfast and evening food in the restaurant was quality however you may need a mortgage if you fancy a few glasses of wine. Finally the staff - totally proficient, professional and smartly attired. Absolutely first class throughout, they looked and acted the part - the hotel has recruited and trained well. Our thanks to the first person we met when we arrived, Ruth on reception. She couldn't do enough to mark our card and help us plan our break. She seemed to be there all the time and when we left still had a big smile for us. Appreciated. Btw Bury St Edmunds is such a lovely place - so glad we visited

"Fish and chips"

8.0

Craving fish and chips so booked the Angel for lunch. Didn’t disappoint, great lunch, good value for money. One thing you always have to consider and be aware of when dining at lunchtime is the noise levels and the baby factor. Good customer service, nice, attentive staff, young, inexperienced but absolutely fine, no fuss, no bother, just those noise levels.

"Disappointing afternoon tea"

6.0

We went for afternoon tea and were very disappointed. The choice of two sandwiches ham with no mustard and egg and cress, half a scotch egg a piece of sausage roll and something described as Welsh rarebit which was dreadful. One fruit and one buttermilk scone with cream and jam. I think it would have been better if they had substituted the buttermilk for a cheese scone. The cakes were very non descript. The coffee was good and you could have as many refills as you wanted. The staff were very nice.

"5* hotel and dinning"

10.0

I have stayed at this hotel several times and will continue to return, as the experience is consistently 5-star. From the reservation team to the concierge, reception staff, and waitresses, the service is always exceptional. Every room I have stayed in has been beautifully presented, with comfortable beds that guarantee a good night’s sleep. The breakfast and Sunday roast are both outstanding and never disappoint. This hotel truly captures the charm of Bury St Edmunds and provides the perfect place to stay. I couldn’t recommend it more highly.

"Splendid"

10.0

I booked this hotel with an hours notice on the phone to a lovely lady who made a note of my requirements and explained about the parking at the hotel . When we arrived we drove through the arch as directed and our car was taken to the car park behind . The reception staff gave us a lovely welcome and our room was ready for 1.30 . A beautifully appointed and spotlessly clean room and the back of the hotel as we had requested a quiet room (215) . The bathroom was furnished with a bath and a power shower and the toiletries smelt divine … I’m try to source these for home ! Excellent quality bedding ensure to a wonderful nights sleep . At Breakfast then next morning we were again warmly greeted and shown to a table . We ordered the eggs Benedict and the full Suffolk and the quality of the local produce was noticeable , high quality and tasty . Well done we had a fantastic stay and will be back .

"Well worth a visit for lovely afternoon tea..."

10.0

I had originally planned an afternoon tea at another local hotel but then read the reviews and someone mentioned The Angel Hotel , it did have some mixed reviews especially for the afternoon tea, so I thought fingers crossed. Oh my goodness, I couldn't have been more delighted with the lovely surroundings, smiley staff, nice and attentive and the tea itself was really delicious, I think there were a couple of the sweet items that could do with a bit of a tweak ( style over substance) but the savoury items were exceptional. Scones were delicious. My little mum whose nearly 90 and has been taken to a lot of afternoon teas by me said she thought it was one of the best - so praise indeed. I would recommend as really enjoyed this .
