"Sunday lunch - NOT recommended"

6.0

Waitresses need to learn more graciousness, the one who showed us to our table had no customer finesse at all and appeared to begrudge our visit!! beef chewy and tough, all vegetables hard. I have visited many times in the week and service and food much much better than today

"Overall very good amazing hotel."

8.0

Overall the hotel is beautiful, staff very friendly, the decor very nice. Bedroom very nice and also very clean. Just two negative things, first I paid the hire price 490 for a room with a bath in the bedroom and I did not get one of them rooms. Secondly during breakfast looking around when everyone was ordering a English muffin breakfast everybody was getting two on their plate with two poached eggs etc. and when my partners came out it only had one muffin one poached egg on the plate. But when we did mention it to one of the staff they did bring out another muffin but it was plaine without the extra egg etc.

"Outstanding"

10.0

Stayed pre covid and the hotel was looking a bit dated. But since then it has been updated and refurbished. Not lost any of its charm. Food was excellent , the staff were outstandingly friendly and helpful . We had our retired greyhound with us . The hotel is very pet friendly and they even gave her a soft toy to play with. It was lovely to walk out of the hotel with the dog straight over to the abbey gardens in the morning. I can certainly recommend The Angel! We will be back

"Nice Lunch"

8.0

We just dropped into the bar for sandwiches and were glad we did. The prawn sandwich could not possibly have held any more prawns and the coffee was delicious. Service was excellent. The decor was a little tired, particularly the toilets, but it was a great lunch.

"Charming, Quirky Stay in the Heart of Bury St Edmunds"

8.0

We nearly didnt stay at the Angel after reading the reviews on here, fortunately Booking.com reviews saved the day and it was a great place to stay - here's our thoughts for you to make your own decisions from We recently stayed at The Angel Hotel and had a good experience. Right in the centre of Bury St Edmunds, it’s perfectly placed for exploring the town’s shops, restaurants, and beautiful Abbey Gardens etc. The building itself is fabulous full of character and history with a lovely quirky charm that makes it feel special from the moment you arrive. Our room was nicely furnished with a super comfy bed, The valet parking was friendly and efficient, We also enjoyed an excellent choice of cocktails and drinks in the bar – well worth a visit in its own right. If I had to note a small negative, the room was on the warm side – but to be fair, this was during one of the hottest UK summers. Being an older, historic building, I imagine installing full air conditioning is tricky. The windows did open, which helped, though it was a little noisy outside at times – nothing that spoiled our stay. All in all, it’s a really nice hotel with bags of character, friendly service, and a super location. We’d definitely stay here again.

"Go elsewhere"

2.0

What a disappointment! For £200 ( no breakfast!) we would have expected a lot more than we got. An extremely dated room with very little in it. A tiny TV, dated drab old brown furniture, dirty, no plugs by the beds let alone a USB point, a shower curtain round an old bath a view of the fire exit staors and the service questionable. We had to hand in our car key for them to park it in their secure car park but it was left unsecurely in the main public car park outside. It was probably great in the 1970's but really needs to have a complete makeover, more shabby than chic!! Premier Inn would be my recommendation.

"Dismayed"

4.0

Yesterday my mother treated my sister an I to lunch using a meal voucher she had been given for her birthday. We were so excited to go. As I life long vegetarian, I thought I’d been given an incorrect menu. There was only one main meal suited to vegetarian/vegan diners. Cauliflower to which I am intolerant. Not even a vegetarian salad available. After some negotiation, a very simple pasta meal was provided as an alternative. My mum ordered fish. Although that was OK in itself, the smashed potatoes and samphire accompanying it were undercooked and unpleasantly oily. She was unable to eat the majority of her meal. Sadly, as a vegetarian/vegan you are unwelcome at The Angel. Even if you do eat meat or fish, you would be better off dining elsewhere.

"Honestly - awful!"

2.0

Afternoon tea at The Angel for my daughter’s 18th, at her request. Absolutely abysmal! I have never been served such awful food, and at £35 a head, this wasn’t a cheap option for the family. The tea trays didn’t even look appealing or appetising, and I’m not even sure what some of the food was…. a revolting looking grey coloured ‘potato’ pattie, ‘Welsh rarebit’ (I think!!) squirted onto a piece of stale bread, the cakes melting onto the plate, ‘bits’ of shell in the prawn brioche roll (again stale)…. The biscuits and macarons (again, I think they were supposed to be macarons, can’t be sure), looked like they had been decorated by 5 year olds! I stuck to the scones, they were passable. I didn’t want to make a fuss because it was a special occasion for my daughter and we booked it weeks ago, but quite honestly, it was appalling. Save your money, pop to Marks and Spencer’s for a sarnie instead.

"Don't bother"

4.0

We went for afternoon tea @ £35.00 per head. Bread in sandwiches so dry it was inedible, but it was replaced without too much fuss. You had to use the same plate for both your savouries and sweets. No pastry fork for your cake or additional hot water for your teas. Frankly for the price it was mediocre at best.

"Sleeping like Angels..."

10.0

This is a fabulous place to stay at, right in the centre of Bury and opposite the Abbey Gardens! The service was absolutely excellent, especially upon our arrival, when our luggage was carried into the house and to the room, and the car was parked for us at the rear of the building. Staff were friendly and helpful throughout. Our room was at the opposite end of the building and required quite a long trip up and down some steps and through long corridors, but I guess this comes with such old buildings. The room itself was cosy, spacious and skilfully decorated, and we slept very well in our beds. I would have preferred a walk-in shower, rather than a bathtub with a shower curtain, which I feel is always a bit of a health hazard, as one needs to step over the rim of the bathtub. Not sure whether all rooms offer the same configuration, or whether other options are available. Breakfast was very nice, with tables that can be freely chosen by the guests, rather than being assigned. The only thing I didn't like so much was the toast, which I felt was too thick and not toasted to a crisp as I would like it. Staff in the breakfast room were friendly, though could have been a bit more attentive. Once they had tended to a table, it seemed difficult to get their attention (some being engaged in conversation with each other and oblivious to the guests at some point). Overall a very nice hotel with superb service, and in an ideal location to explore the city, or to go for walks or runs in the Abbey Gardens opposite the street. Loved it!
