Sunscape Dominicus La Romana is a visually stunning resort set in beautifully maintained grounds. The gardens are immaculate and full of wildlife, which was a real highlight of our stay! The beach is fantastic and the pools are equally impressive. The staff are incredibly friendly, welcoming, and always smiling, which is one of the resort’s strongest points.
The buffet spread was beautifully presented and offered a wide variety of options, which we appreciated as vegetarians. However, despite how nice it looked, there were some concerning issues. Guests regularly used the same serving utensils for different dishes, leading to cross-contamination. There were also flies frequently around the food, and if you arrived later after opening, much of the food was noticeably cold.
Unfortunately, one of us became very ill during the stay with diarrhoea and vomiting, which affected the holiday for several days. While we can’t say for certain, we strongly suspect the buffet — particularly salads or fruit — as the cause.
The à la carte restaurants offered very limited vegetarian options, so we only ate at the buffet. Overall, the food was fine in terms of variety, but the quality and hygiene concerns were disappointing.
We also upgraded to the Sun Club expecting a more premium and relaxed experience, but unfortunately it didn’t feel that way. There are no wristbands or visible identifiers for Sun Club guests, and no staff checking access, so it didn’t feel exclusive. When booking with TUI, we were told the Sun Club pool was adults-only; however, once at the resort the signage had tape placed over the “adults only” wording. This wasn’t an issue for us — all the children there were very well behaved — but it was confusing as it didn’t match what we were told beforehand.
We were also told the Sun Club pool and beach areas would be quieter, but this was not the case. There was construction noise right next to these areas, and we could still clearly hear the blaring bass from the main pool, which defeated the purpose of upgrading for peace and quiet.
Adding to this, we were not made aware prior to arrival that refurbishments and building works were taking place around and next to the resort. This was particularly disappointing as we booked this resort after cancelling a previous holiday due to construction at that property. TUI did not make us aware that construction would also be happening here and we regularly heard loud banging and drilling near our room, next to the pool and beach, which further added to the already high noise levels.
Another ongoing noise issue was the use of loud, bike-like transport vehicles by staff to move goods around the resort. These frequently passed close to the rooms from the early hours of the morning and continued throughout the day and into the evenings, making it difficult to rest even outside peak activity times.
If you are looking for a peaceful and relaxing holiday, this is probably not the resort for you. While the resort appears to attract many families and couples of all ages, the atmosphere doesn’t reflect that audience. The loud music and constant party-style vibes feel mismatched, with music blaring in every corner of the resort. The bass from the pool speakers can be heard everywhere, even on the beach, making it difficult to find any quiet areas.
Unfortunately, the rooms were a major disappointment. They are old-fashioned, substandard, and clearly in need of refurbishment and a deep clean. Our first rooms shower head was hanging off, air conditioning was extremely loud, balcony door didn’t close properly, and the finishings were poor. We requested a room change, but were moved to an identical room with the same issues excluding the shower head.
While one of us was unwell, we expected the room to be cleaned thoroughly due to hygiene and bacteria concerns. However, on several occasions housekeeping did not manage to get to our room at all. Our bottled water was also not topped up multiple times, which was particularly difficult as staying hydrated was vital while being ill and dehydrated.
While most staff are friendly and well-meaning, the constant interactions may feel overwhelming for some guests. We were frequently interrupted while trying to relax by staff selling excursions, spa treatments, and activities, and sometimes they didn’t take no for an answer. Some interactions with male staff in particular felt uncomfortable at times, as they tended to overstay their welcome and linger longer than appropriate.
Another downside was the lack of enforcement around sunbed reservations. Despite clear signs stating that sunbeds cannot be reserved, many guests left towels on them and walked away for hours. Staff did not enforce this rule, even after we raised it, meaning we often arrived early to find empty sunbeds we couldn’t use.
Overall, Sunscape Dominicus La Romana is undeniably beautiful, with stunning grounds, a great beach, and genuinely friendly staff. However, the constant blaring music, unexpected construction noise, outdated rooms, hygiene concerns at the buffet, inconsistent housekeeping during illness, and a Sun Club upgrade that didn’t deliver on expectations mean it may not be the right choice for those seeking a calm, relaxing getaway.
