"Above average accomodations in a convenient location with onsite dining and lounge facilities."

8.0

Room was spacious. Two televisions was nice. adequate mini kitchen, air worked well. Hot water worked well. Ample supplies whenever needed. Breakfast was good, cooked up fresh in the kitchen. Loved having the pool bar right there in a short walk, and even though there was live music it was not too loud. They have dock carts to get your belongings to your room and Elevators make that easy too.

The suite was nice, though the balcony furniture needed cushions, & we had to wipe it down. the cement was cracking so wear shoes. Couches' back cushions were starting to sag and were difficult to sit on for too long without pillows so we had to use our bed pillows. Yuck. The rest was great.

The location in Marathon. Perfect for seeing the keys. A very nice pool and the fitness room

My daughter slept on a soda bed. In of itself, not a problem at all. But it was a sofabed from another generation, where you really feel the springs and the mattress is very thin. However, the worst was the wind whipping through the cracks of the door frame. The only solution was to run a lot of heat. The rooms definitely need to be insulated to minimal basics.

"Rundown with either a cash flow issue or a deliberate lack of reinvestment into the property."

Skipjack is a run down resort that could be so much better with more maintenance. We traveled to the Keys for our “babymoon” and wanted a centrally-located hotel to enjoy the all the keys have to offer The location is perfect, with so much to do up and down the keys. There’s a Publix nearby, which was great for quick meals and filling our waters with ice. The staff was very kind and helpful, which is why I feel a bit guilty about this review. Everything “wrong” with Skipjack resort is the result of deferred maintenance and cut corners, undoubtedly decisions coming from the top. TL;DR Positives: - Location - Staff - Room size Negatives: - Cold pool :( - Run down - Bad amenities - Breakfast - WiFi bandwidth insufficiency We’ll start with the amenities. The pool is unheated due to a broken heater that hasn’t been fixed in at least a decade, according to a longtime resident we met. The cold pool might be acceptable if there was a hot tub, but there isn’t anywhere to warm up. The pool temp hovered around 68° for our entire stay, much too cold for any sort of extended swim beyond a quick dip to cool off. The ocean was warmer than the pool, for crying out loud. The pool area was also rundown, with peeling paint around the edge that stuck to your bum if you were sitting on the edge. Furthermore, the towels require a $25 deposit, and you have to exchange them daily (if you’re lucky and there are still towels available). One would think that a $70/day “Resort Fee” would cover at least the bare minimum in terms of maintenance and towels. I cannot stress enough how much the cold pool impacted our trip. I had hoped for a babymoon where I could float in the pool and enjoy the buoyancy of water Next up is the cleanliness and comfort of the rooms. We stayed in a one bedroom suite with a kitchenette. There were two mini-split A/C units, one in the living area and one in the bedroom. They did an okay job of cooling the room, but did absolutely nothing to remove moisture from the air. This resulted in everything feeling damp, and we had to increase the air temperature past the dew point to ensure the humidity wasn’t condensing on us. I get it, it’s Florida, but we’ve never had this issue in other hotels. There’s also an obvious mold/mildew problem. There was mold in the shower, on the kitchen sponge (which they cut in half to save money, leaving the sponge open to the air), and in one of the kitchen drawers covering the cork trivets. We didn’t raise the mold issue to the staff for a few reasons, but mostly because we didn’t think this would be an isolated issue, and we didn’t discover the trivet until we’d been there a few days. Like other reviews have mentioned, the floors did not feel clean, and I took to keeping a towel by the bed to clean our feet before getting into bed. It isn’t the cleaning staff’s fault, however. The type of tile in the rooms requires vigorous scrubbing every few cleans due to their texture. I don’t know who chose that, but it was probably someone who doesn’t do much mopping. The staff was wonderful, especially the cleaners. They replaced our towels daily, often giving us extras, which was very nice. I think the room cleanliness is more of a maintenance issue than anything else. I’m sure the cleaners have only a short amount of time to clean the rooms, and couldn’t be expected to do the kind of deep cleaning this place needs in the 30 mins or so that they have in each room. Finally, the breakfast. This was a huge plus for us before arrival, as the prospect of “free” breakfast combined with the nearby Publix, would allow us to save money on meals. Upon arrival we learned that breakfast was covered by our resort fee, which is laughable to think that $70/day gets us a so/so breakfast. I will say, the coffee is decent and the eggs and bacon are good for a hotel breakfast, but the waffle makers are dirty to the point of leaving baked on black specks on the waffles. The hours are also relatively inconvenient, running only from 8:00 - 10:00 am. I would have appreciated a slightly later end time, but then again I am not an early riser. We wound up only eating the “free” breakfast 3/7 days of our stay, opting instead to sleep in and check out various other options around town. In conclusion, we appreciated Skipjack for its location and staff. It made for the a good home base in the keys for the week. It could be a great resort if it had better maintenance and amenities, but unfortunately it’s clear they either don’t have the money or the desire to address the easily fixable issues (especially the pool, that was a major bummer for me).

"3 star resort striving to be 4 star"

6.0

Overall lacking in consistency. The positives: great location and great views even if you have a standard room. The food is also surprisingly yummy for such a small kitchen (although all the restaurants were closed for some reason - bar service only). They offer high quality live music on a regular basis and the staff is friendly. Overall quiet hours were respected. The negatives: it's an old building and the face lifts cannot provide insulation or soundproofing. We could hear our neighbors. Housekeeping and maintenance seem to struggle to keep up. Examples: the dishes in our cupboard were clearly not clean when we arrived and there were no dishwasher starter packs provided. Multiple dust bunnies and mustiness was noted upon arrival. We used their bicycles while visiting and one had a flat tire the entire week after acknowlegement by staff. The bed matress and pillows were well-worn and could use an upgrade. Finally - we witnessed a bartender blow his nose behind the bar and continue serving customers. That was the end of ordering for us.
