"Sadly disappointed"

4.0

My wife and I have been coming here since the mid '70's and sadly will not return. If you've never been before by all means go. It's a spectacular setting. Quiet, peaceful, historic, drizzly, just what you want in an Olympic Peninsula stay. But it is far from what is was ten or more (50!) years ago. For starters, only a gas fire in the amazing Lodge great room fireplace. It's just not the same. Will miss the wood burning fire and the no doubt carcinogenic smoke smell. Debatable which is worse for the environment, propane or wood, but in this authentic lodge from waaaay back in the day, it needs to be real. The restaurant is skippable. On our last stay they were baffled by a simple martini order and when it finally came it was barely an ounce, and warm. Fortunately The Salmon House just up the road is really really good. We did try to go for breakfast only to find a buffet that upon further inspection was a half step above what you'd find at a Best Western. Of course the rooms are somewhat dated, not unexpected here. But cleanliness was an issue with stains on the bedding and towels, spots on the walls in the bathroom, and a balcony and chairs that needed sweeping. The heater was not working but the small gas fireplace (ok in the rooms) was enough on this mild day. Like so many places these days it seemed to be run on a skeleton crew, but the employees we did see were friendly and helpful. So long old friend.
