My fiance and I were treated to a weekend away at the Ocean Beach Spa and Hotel as a treat from his work. We were very excited, especially as I’m eight months pregnant and a pregnancy massage was apart of the package! Sadly, things didn’t go to plan and we left after dinner, not even staying the night.
When we arrived, there was no where to park in Ocean or any of the sister hotels, or on the road. After about 40 minutes of waiting, we did manage to get a space on the road and pay £22 for parking (for less than 24 hours). There was no disabled parking, as I am disabled too and can’t walk far. This was frustrating and a heads up would have been appreciated or a way for those staying to reserve a space if needed.
Our first stop of the weekend was to the spa for our massages. The ladies in the spa were very friendly, and this was the best part of the day. Both my partner and I enjoyed the massages.
Then we wanted to go for a swim. The hotel had an outdoor pool but it didn’t look very clean and it was obviously too cold to use. There was no one in or near the pool, which says something considering the hotel was fully booked up apparently.
We queued at reception (service was very slow!) to ask where the indoor pool was, and that was at a sister hotel so we had to walk down the road to the Suncliff to use their pool. We had to queue again at their reception to ask to use the pool - again, slow service so I had to go sit down and wait. We were told it was a heated pool, which it does state on the website, but it was freezing. It was too cold to relax in, too cold for my baby bump and totally not a relaxing experience! After five minutes of dipping our toes in, we complained to their reception but was told there was nothing they could do about it. (Maybe don’t advertise it as a heated pool?) They suggested another walk to another hotel down the road to use their outdoor pool and suggested maybe that would be warmer but it was too far to walk and risk it being just as cold.
We went back to our room which was a double room with sea view. It was basic and small but no issues with it other than it had no air con so it was roasting in there and if you’ve ever been somewhere hot whilst eight months pregnant, you’ll know how uncomfortable that is!
After showers, we went for dinner. Due to an engagement party, we were unable to eat in our chosen restaurant (The Atlantic) and we were told we couldn’t eat at the sister hotel restaurant (The Atlantis) despite both being on the package that work had paid for. We ate in their cafe area and basically seated ourselves as service was really slow again. The staff were nice, but service was either too slow or at one point, too fast - I was half way through my dinner and quite clearly still eating when I was asked if I was ready for dessert and could they bring it to the table yet. Mid mouthful, mid steak! No, we were not ready for our desserts, we hadn’t finished our mains yet. We were beginning to feel rushed at this point. There was also the issue that despite the meal being pre paid for, we were expected to pay extra for some items on the set menu. Due to my food allergies, I couldn’t eat any of the starters so I asked if I could just have a main meal and not pay extra but I was declined this suggestion. There were also small things too such as no steak knife for my steak and the waiter never bringing me one, so I had to ask another waiter, then one waiter saying my partner could have pizza and then another waiter saying he couldn’t, and ordering our desserts at the same time as everything else, but then the waiter taking our dessert order again later on, despite another waiter saying it was ready to be served to us (half way through our mains.) There was no communication between anyone, and no consistency.
After dinner, which seemed rushed, we went back to our room. We decided at this point to go home because there was nothing to do - the bar/restaurant was closed to accommodate the party, we couldn’t go swimming or do anything else. The spa didn’t even have a jacuzzi to sit in. In our boiling hot room, there was a small tv in the corner with basic channels. And lastly, we were a bit anxious about how everything shuts by 8.30pm and then there’ll be no food after that time so no midnight snack for the hungry, pregnant woman when she can’t sleep because of the uncomfortable bed.
After all the walking and waiting around we had done that afternoon, I was feeling worse than if I had just stayed at home.
So, we left. We came home to our own bed, with airconditioning, a tv we could actually use, and slept really well.
I think in our minds we imagined we would go to a hotel, and then just go downstairs to a warm pool, swim until our hearts content and eat dinner and pass out. Or if I felt I needed to rest in the bed, my partner could go swimming alone in the same hotel - not have to leave the entire building and walk to another hotel to use the pool - not that he did because it wasn’t heated anyway! We felt like we just had to stay in our room.
Unfortunately this wasn’t the experience away we were expecting, and we have done spas and spa weekends away before and this spa hotel does not even come close to others in Bournemouth.
