"Excellent resort experience! Very friendly staff!"

10.0

You won’t be disappointed coming here, extremely safe, clean, with the most friendly staff! As a Canadian coming to visit we felt like family with our hosts! Book early in the week for a restaurant night, they book up fast. We were there during spring break and they accommodated the young people well while my family enjoyed their trip as well!

"Wonderful Stay at Barcelo Myan Colonial"

8.0

Had a great stay with family and friends March. This resort was great value for the money. Beach , rooms (6423) , food , grounds all great. Staff maybe could have been a little more friendly but that didn’t affect our trip. No Corona was a downer but we managed!! LOL.

"Family vacation"

8.0

The resort resort itself is beautiful and very clean, the food was good but repetitive and drinks were a hit or miss. The one thing this resort needs is a coffee shop, it was impossible to find a decent iced coffee. I would also avoid traveling in march due to spring breakers and grad city they took over the place and were very rowdy and belligerent but overall our trip was great and i would return.

"Barcelo Colonial Maya, Sept. 9-17, 2025"

8.0

Hola! This was our 2nd visit to the Barcelo Colonial as a couple in the last two years and had some very good experiences with only one major issue listed below. I have stayed at the Colonial, Tropical, and Palace over 10 times solo, so I have excellent knowledge of the resort, rooms, beaches, food, pools, etc. First, two years ago I brought my girlfriend, eventually my wife, there for the first time and we had a great experience. She loved the resort. In 2025, we stayed at the Jalisco building 3rd floor which was only 10 doors down from where we stayed in 2024. Excellent room and location to the pool, only 2-3 minutes away, and less than 5 min. walk to the main buffet, As every experience over the past 15 years there solo, the room was impeccable, very nice furniture, great maid service, clean rooms daily, and daily replenishment of the minifridge. Zero issues, great Air Conditioning, and lovely, lush, garden view. Nice and quiet. Food, excellent! We ate at the Santa Fe (Southwest USA menu) twice and loved the Ribeye. The 2nd night at the Santa Fe was packed and we were highly impressed with the staff as they were very busy. I complimented the manager on duty as he did an excellent job managing his team. Another night we ate at the Kyoto, Japanese. Excellent service by our grill chef and staff. My first time back to a Japanese restaurant in over 30 years and we can't wait to return. As always, the food and the service at the Main Buffet was excellent. Zero issues other than I wish the resort served Dos Equis or Modelo Dark Beer. We only had it 2-3 times at dinner at the Main Buffett and it seemed to never be served at the other restaurants. Last on the food, when we were there two years ago, they informed us that we could not eat at the Rodizio/Brazilian restaurant at the Palace since we were staying at the Colonial, but we could if we paid a fee, maybe $50. I had eaten at the Rodizio another time several years ago and there was never an issue, so I hope they change the policy on this and allow guests from other buildings eat there. Cons of Trip: The only negative experience we had which has been a repeat issue over 10-15 years, was the extreme loudspeakers set up near the Tropical pool area which was approx. 150 yards away from where we mostly stayed outdoors at the Colonial pool and beach area. The noise started at 9-9:30 AM and continued until 4:00 PM every day. This was a large, concert-style speaker that was intrusive and too much. I have experienced the loudness there over 15 years and it was worse in 2025. Not only did we hear the noise from this speaker, but we had numerous different music and speakers from the boardwalk garden, pool, pool restaurant, and also from loud guests who felt necessary to entertain everyone with their own music style. I very politely walked to the Entertainment Coordinator at the Tropical pool and requested that he turn the volume down and he said he had to entertain everyone, so the answer was no, he would not lower the volume. I have written numerous reviews on TA for the Barcelo management to see but they never fix the problem of the intrusive music. My wife and I eventually had to move away from the Colonial pool area and visit the pool at the Palace and then to the Maya Caribe beach area. The noise level carried well over 200 yards so truly you could not escape the music or the Entertainment director talking/screaming in the microphone. We are returning to the Barcelo Colonial again in May 14-21, 2025 and hope very much that management reads our concern and lowers the speaker volume at the Tropical pool/beach side. Otherwise, my wife and I who are retired, will look at alternative Cancun resorts in the future. We truly love the Barcelo and hope to return if they correct the volume issue. Because we are retired, we can visit the Barcelo more than once annually. I should not have to do this, but I plan to bring an industrial style headphone for my ears to try to block the noise level. We look forward to returning in 6 weeks. D&K

"First time all-inclusive"

Very enjoyable, very relaxing place to spend a week with the family. Plenty of included sports activities in a beautiful setting. The gym and spa are excellent but bring your own tennis and padel equipment if you are an enthusiast - the loaner rackets and balls are a bit knackered.

"This Canadian will Return...Absolutely !!"

10.0

Barcelo Mayan Riveria Colonial is probably one of the cleanest resorts we have ever been to.It is a complex of 6 and the entire grounds are immaculate. Rooms: Rooms were not overly huge but very comfortable. We were on the ground floor, which was absolutely fine. No issue with insects at all.Beds are very comfy as well as the pillows. The air conditioner worked well and we had to actually open the screen door a few times to warm things up. There were no face cloths so bring your own.Im sure if you asked for some they would have them though.Bring your own shampoo and conditioner as the ones in the shower are not that great but they are always full. The bar fridge is refilled daily with lots of pop and Heineken beer. Also bottled water. It is a bit noisy if you are facing the theater while shows are playing but we were central to everything .Our room number was 6431. The pools: Huge and very very clean. They have a very nice kiddie pool with lots of slides and a life guard.Pool bars were great and service was quick The beach was beautiful and we definately lucked out as we had zero sargassum seaweed and that was our biggest worry to be honest. It is a bit rocky and a lot of corral in spots when you are getting in.Water shoes are a definate help for sure. The vest entry points were in the direction of the Palace area before a rock formation that goes out in the water. There are a lot of fish, turtles and stingrays. We didn't get to see the turtles or stingrays but if ypu go to the wharf you will see tons of fish. Please do not feed the turtles bananas as they are harmful to them. The water was clear and warm. We were able to secure chairs every morning with no problem and as soon as we were done with them we would let others know.We spent mornings at the beach and afternoons at the pools. Wildlife: we saw Coatis,Raccoons,Squirrels,Gecko,Iguanas, birds,Pelicans and Spider monkey .I believe there are 3 that just hang out. Food was pretty good.We ate at the Japenese,Steak House and Italian .Skip the Italian, as it was not great at all.The other 2 were fine. The buffets were typical buffets .The food was good. You certainly wont or shouldn't go hungry. They have very yummy soft serve ice cream! Entertainment is lacking a bit.It would be nice to have a Marieatche band going around the lobbies or something to spice it up a bit so you felt you were in Mexico. Staff were all very friendly and hard workers. We tipped in Pecos as well as US dollars even though we are from Canada. Overall this is definately a fantastic resort and one that we would definately return to for sure!! Thank you for a wonderful week of relaxation and beauty!

"Nice vacation"

6.0

While the property was beautiful and the restaurant staff were excellent, the experience was marred by poor front desk service, excessive extra fees, and a lack of daytime activities for seniors and children. The late-night entertainment was poorly timed for families. The spa is worth it, very nice.

"Lovely Vacation!"

8.0

We had a fantastic time at this resort. Being that we travelled with kids under 4, the splash pad pool was amazing for them. The beaches were beautiful, and the resort is super well maintained. A few improvements I would make, being a family resort: 1. Changing stations in all bathrooms (there were no changing stations in any men’s bathroom, and none in the lobby at all). 2. Meal times: breakfast at 7am, lunch at 12:30 and dinner at 6:30 was difficult. Even the snack bars, open from 10:30am didn’t serve lunch until 12:30. With kids on a schedule and napping, it would have been nice to have more flexibility. 3. Service at the buffets was lacking, where our drinks weren’t made right, or our request for high chairs was often ignored. Staff never came around to ask for more drinks, or interact with us much. 4. À la carte: family friendly times were only available the last 2 nights of our stay, so we couldn’t explore more options. Dinners at 9pm were all that was available.

"Our first time in MX"

6.0

We went to the Barcelo Maya Colonial to celebrate a few Birthdays on a family trip March 22-29 2026, there are a few things that we did not read in the reviews, first you do need water shoes, there are a lot of rocks in the area and it was hard to find areas that did not have any hidden in the water. There was a few issues with the resort and I feel the resort can correct the issue simply by ensuring guest know the rules before hand. The first thing to correct remove the Towel Card crap, people place a towel on Chairs at 6:30 am but are not using them until after lunch and some people did not show up at the beach until after 3pm with the chairs being saved and not used for the whole time. This is crazy, have a attendant remove any towel if no one has used the chairs after an hour or two, we have seen this happen at other resorts without any issue, there are too many people looking for places to sit but none are available, we even saw two arguments about this, if a chair is not used then remove the item and have the attendant remove them and place them in a safe area for the guest to recover their items, it works. The second item is FOOD, why was it the exact same each and every day (morning, noon and night) really you could not come up with a different menu for a few days? And there was a lot of salt in each item, not needed the flavor was good but too much salt. We were in Mexico where was the Mexican food, just a single taco stand at lunch in the Buffet not what we expected for a Mexican resort, you’re telling us there is only one Mexican item in MX for food. We did expect to have some type of Japanese food but that was not really a Japanese experience same for the Seafood restaurant again nothing really stood out for both restaurant, the Italian restaurant was a little better. The rooms are just as you would expect for a resort so nothing special. Nothing special about the overall rooms. The grounds are great they are keep clean and the staff are cleaning everything from the beach to the grass, the pool area and the entertainment spaces, the resort is very nice. Overall we liked the resort but it could be that much better, I would rate this a 4* at best, I feel the food is a big miss for this resort so I feel 3+ is a better rating for this resort.
