Hola! This was our 2nd visit to the Barcelo Colonial as a couple in the last two years and had some very good experiences with only one major issue listed below. I have stayed at the Colonial, Tropical, and Palace over 10 times solo, so I have excellent knowledge of the resort, rooms, beaches, food, pools, etc.
First, two years ago I brought my girlfriend, eventually my wife, there for the first time and we had a great experience. She loved the resort. In 2025, we stayed at the Jalisco building 3rd floor which was only 10 doors down from where we stayed in 2024. Excellent room and location to the pool, only 2-3 minutes away, and less than 5 min. walk to the main buffet, As every experience over the past 15 years there solo, the room was impeccable, very nice furniture, great maid service, clean rooms daily, and daily replenishment of the minifridge. Zero issues, great Air Conditioning, and lovely, lush, garden view. Nice and quiet.
Food, excellent! We ate at the Santa Fe (Southwest USA menu) twice and loved the Ribeye. The 2nd night at the Santa Fe was packed and we were highly impressed with the staff as they were very busy. I complimented the manager on duty as he did an excellent job managing his team. Another night we ate at the Kyoto, Japanese. Excellent service by our grill chef and staff. My first time back to a Japanese restaurant in over 30 years and we can't wait to return.
As always, the food and the service at the Main Buffet was excellent. Zero issues other than I wish the resort served Dos Equis or Modelo Dark Beer. We only had it 2-3 times at dinner at the Main Buffett and it seemed to never be served at the other restaurants.
Last on the food, when we were there two years ago, they informed us that we could not eat at the Rodizio/Brazilian restaurant at the Palace since we were staying at the Colonial, but we could if we paid a fee, maybe $50. I had eaten at the Rodizio another time several years ago and there was never an issue, so I hope they change the policy on this and allow guests from other buildings eat there.
Cons of Trip: The only negative experience we had which has been a repeat issue over 10-15 years, was the extreme loudspeakers set up near the Tropical pool area which was approx. 150 yards away from where we mostly stayed outdoors at the Colonial pool and beach area. The noise started at 9-9:30 AM and continued until 4:00 PM every day. This was a large, concert-style speaker that was intrusive and too much. I have experienced the loudness there over 15 years and it was worse in 2025. Not only did we hear the noise from this speaker, but we had numerous different music and speakers from the boardwalk garden, pool, pool restaurant, and also from loud guests who felt necessary to entertain everyone with their own music style. I very politely walked to the Entertainment Coordinator at the Tropical pool and requested that he turn the volume down and he said he had to entertain everyone, so the answer was no, he would not lower the volume. I have written numerous reviews on TA for the Barcelo management to see but they never fix the problem of the intrusive music. My wife and I eventually had to move away from the Colonial pool area and visit the pool at the Palace and then to the Maya Caribe beach area. The noise level carried well over 200 yards so truly you could not escape the music or the Entertainment director talking/screaming in the microphone.
We are returning to the Barcelo Colonial again in May 14-21, 2025 and hope very much that management reads our concern and lowers the speaker volume at the Tropical pool/beach side. Otherwise, my wife and I who are retired, will look at alternative Cancun resorts in the future. We truly love the Barcelo and hope to return if they correct the volume issue. Because we are retired, we can visit the Barcelo more than once annually. I should not have to do this, but I plan to bring an industrial style headphone for my ears to try to block the noise level.
We look forward to returning in 6 weeks.
