Jade Garden Hotel Beijing

I have stayed here before so knew what to expect. Good value for money but nothing special. Location is great. Lukewarm shower on last day didn't help my impressions.

When I arrived to an attractive lobby the man at the desk spoke good English. Few others did, and this is a gripe I have when hotel/airport/rail people don't speak the number one travel language in the world. The room was large, and as with other Chinese hotels had no CNN or BBC, just CGTN (Chinese News Network). Hotel had a computer on the desk, but as I learned later it wouldn't connect to the Internet, except Chinese URLs. There was a bathtub and plenty of room to put my clothes away. In the bathroom, there was no water from the faucet and I had to call for the hotel plumber, but this should have been checked before arrival. The neighborhood was not downtown, but very near Forbidden City and other local restaurants, banks and shops. Tiananmen Square was quite a long walk, well beyond the closest subway stop, which itself was quite a trek. Not far from the hotel was a very commercial area with attractive pedestrian mall, where I ate a few meals. Oddly, my otherwise helpful desk manager, who pointed me to the right, didn't tell me my first night that to the left were also a lot of restaurants (he just signaled there were some across the street). The other staff spoke very poor English and misdirected me to a laundry service, not there. Another point. I was due again, but no laundromat in hotel nor nearby. I found a store that wanted $1.50/pair of socks. That rivaled hotel prices. Hotels should have coin laundries. And no one knew where one might be.

Good Hotel, great breakfast, clean, and people very helpful, most of them speak english. Also, you can exchange money with them without any extra fee. Very good!!!!

The location is fantastic and the price is great. If you’re a diva or someone who is overly concerned with wanting a slick, modern esthetic, then you you might want to look elsewhere, but you won’t find it at this price in this area. It’s an old hotel and it has a bit of a vintage, grandma’s house type vibe. I’m fine with that. The shower worked great and the bed was comfortable and that’s what’s important to me. The amenities are typical of most budget hotel chains, which is also fine with me and all I need. The staff always had an English speaker on duty and they were very patient and helpful. My only complaint is that the bar closes too early, but who cares. You’re in Beijing! Everything you could want is within a few blocks of the hotel. If I ever go back, I don’t see why I would look anywhere else for lodging.

Our tour was starting on November 7, we arrived earlier to get settled and spent 3 days at the Jade Garden Hotel. They arranged a car to pick us up at the airport, it went without a hitch, great service. The room was spacious, a bit old fashioned, typical of older Chnese hotels, all amenities, good WIFI, beds were hard in the Chinese tradition, but we slept well. At least always one person spoke English at the reception desk. Don't try the restaurant downstairs, they don't seem to like westerners. Most guest were Chinese, but pleasant environment, quiet room facing pretty glazed tiles green roofs. Very central, walking distance to one of the entrances of the Forbidden City, 2 blocks from the famous shopping area of Wangfujing, restaurants and shops all around, a real delight to walk around, and very safe. No problems buying our Gin, Rhum and mixes a block away. Vibrant and lively area, not much english spoken, but like the rest of China anyway, althought they all have their translator app on their smartphones. A safe an comfy hotel at a reasonable price.
