Hotel Maria del Carmen Merida

Staff were friendly and most spoke English. The rooms were big and clean. It’s in a great location close to the main square, bars, restaurants, and activities. The food was good and there is a pool bar.

The stay at the hotel was horrible from the very beginning. The staff was rude and barely spoke to the guest. After getting to our room after traveling for hours come to find out it reeked like smoke! The staff questioned my group and tried charging us for the smoke smell. Forget about asking for an extra towel because they will tell you no. Never again would i stay at this hotel. Completely horrible experience.

Great staff, 3-4 blocks from Plaza Grande. Free parking included if you have a rental car but I would never try to drive in the city. A relative who is a former NYC cab driver managed nicely for us, but cabs are cheap and easy to get - 25 peso minimum $1 USD = 17, 4 rider max. Seldom had over 40 peso ride. Hotel shows more evidence of deferred maintenance than I expected (e.g.,broken tabletops, chairs poolside) but none that interfered with our enjoyment. Shower delivered pitifully low stream, a result of the very “hard” water that makes it almost impossible to work up a lather, but this is true of all the hotels there. AC was great. Would likely stay here again on return trip.

We actually booked this hotel for our last night in Mérida after having had a horrendous experience with another near-by hotel and Hotel María del Carmen was a God-sent. The staff was very nice and pleasant, the drinks cheap, the location centric and the breakfast good. This is a great option for the area. Not to mention room prices are very affordable here!

The room was clean and comfortable. The hotel has many in-room amenities that we wanted - coffee maker, hair dryer and Wi-fi. The location is good and within walking distance to the main square. The hotel could use a fresh coat of paint and updating in areas ( which is being worked on).

There were both pros and cons to this stay. The location is incredible! It is a very short walk (5-7 minutes) to Plaza Grande, there is a nice Cantina about 1 minute away....everything is very accessible! The staff is nice enough, nothing to go out of their way, but were helpful when needed. They were very excited to sell a tour, but I wouldn't book through them again. The rooms are fine, but the maids will always come in to clean the room daily (even with the do not disturb sign on the door). During my stay, they were doing construction, and there was constant and very loud pounding from 8 a.m. until some time into the afternoon/evening, which was frustrating. The restaurant is not good, the food is barely mediocre. With so many other places, venture out and don't eat the food at the hotel. I booked this primarily because the pool area looked great and for the location. There's really not much atmosphere at the pool area, and mixed drinks from the bar are not great (and I tried several). Overall, the location was the best thing about the hotel. It was acceptable for the price, but I would likely not stay there again.
