Since watching Mary Kate & Ashley go to Atlantis 30 years ago on VHS, the island where the resort sits has been beautiful. Unlike other resorts, we were never bothered by natives trying to haggle on the beach. We stayed at the REEF, which was wonderful for a family of 5 (kids are 20, 17, 13, all girls). We used the kitchen for some breakfasts, and the family area was great for playing games when we were too sun-tired to go out. We did bring our own games. The rooms clearly need a refresh/update. The TVs are old and limited, and you cannot stream to them. A lot of little things bugged my slightly obsessive cleaning self - like handles loose, missing lights, a few plugs, and no USB ports. It felt slightly rundown once you left the room.
We didn't stray much further than the reef pool. My husband and kids did some water park and beach too. We enjoyed walking through the vastness of the resort, but we also took the convenient shuttle when we thought it was necessary.
The animal viewing is such a fun and unique thing at the resort, but why are they so dirty? The Dig (underwater aquarium) is such a cool attraction, but it was underwhelming - it's a great area to add interactions or better lighting.
We made lifelong memories and took a lot of pictures, but my head is spinning looking at the final bill. I booked through JetBlue Vacations and paid for the whole flight and hotel up front. It was over $9000, which is a lot of money. We decided to link my Amex to the room, so all we would need was a room key for food and such.
We ate room service the first night (mediocre), night - Cltwoaudio's (do not recommend no one was thrilled with the food), night three - Paranza (delicious, gf options, wonderful service), night four- Chop Stix (so yummy, gf options, great service, big turntable in the middle of the table to make sharing food easy), and night five - Bimini Road - not easy for the GF people, my youngest got GF pasta and sauce and she was happy - I couldn't really figure out what I wanted - but the other said the Conch Friters, Mahi Mahi, Spicy Jerk chicking, and the ribs were good. For lunches, we did a field trip (did not agree with my entire system, weird allergic reaction, but could be me - it's spicy except the falafel, according to my oldest), Shake Shack (a huge success with GF buns), and another stand.
The girls got their hair done at the spa and were very happy. I was not allowed to get a massage because my surgery was 6 months ago (which is their policy), so I recommend bringing a doctor's note. The only other things we charged with a souvenir for each kid and a few things for friends. We were given a sheet when we arrived saying all the breakfasts at certain restaurants were free under $100 (a credit for our booking), and we had a $150 resort credit from JetBlue, which I guess the hotel decided is for one breakfast that we had no desire to go to - but they applied it elsewhere.
I am still wrestling with how my AMEX bill looks like it's over $ 7,000!!!
How can they charge so much extra? Ok, the resort fee is $75 or $95 a day - is that per person, then they add a room charge per room of ranging $460 for one room and $306 the other a day - and we had the 2-room suite, which they count as 2 rooms. Then they add the Reef Gratuity fee each day for each room, $37.50 and $25.50, plus a daily maid gratuity fee of $40, plus they add tax somewhere. It's 2 pages, but they gave some credits, so the whole bill is confusing. JetBlue Vacations and The Reef will be contacted. If I knew the fees were that astronomical, I would never have booked the ATLANTIS. We would have picked a different resort that didn't hide every single fee. I swear I read everything, but I'm frustrated.
Bottom line, we had a great vacation, but feel blindsided by all the extra costs we hadn't planned on, and the resort is not all-inclusive.
