Staff were all friendly. Reception is a nice window but the poor receptionist is sat at a grim office desk a couple of metres distant. Champney’s took it over in December 2025, and there’s mention of refurbishment, but no sign that it’s happening. It’s a hotel of many carpets that need cleaning. Pretty dire. The rooms must have been renumbered, because Room 10 doesn’t have a great view anymore - just internal facing, overlooking skylight and unkempt rooftop. The curtains didn’t fill the window and a gap at the bottom of the room door let in light from the corridor. A door on the wardrobe had to be wedged shut. Cobwebs on the ceiling. It’s one thing to be getting on with refurbishment. But in the meantime..no water in the room, a minimal drinks tray, and a breakfast buffet with cheap orange juice direct from the carton, sausage with gristle, congealing beans. Ketchup and cheap jam in pudding bowls.

Conveniently situated.

The hotel is okay,but could really do with some sort of makeover.Rather tired.

Wonderful food and staff. Ruth was great and very friendly. She couldnt do enough to help us. Very busy in the bar with lots going on with only ruth serving them all who never stopped smiling and laughing with all the tables ( even when we saw her later on in the hotel round corner when she was working there after serving us which we found out was ran by the same people champneys) A real asset to the old hall.

Perfect location to see the town but not the easiest place to park. The Hotel has so much history (it is not modern) and has a really nice feel to it. Great value for money although I would recommend eating out and relishing the first class breakfast which was wonderful - extra points for the Marmite !!! - and outstanding service from Alastair and his team.
