Hotel Alpenroyal

We booked a room with a view and it did not disappoint. The Matterhorn was in full view when it wasn't hidden in the clouds. The pool and spa facilities are enjoyable and quiet. Beds and linen were comfortable. Disliked · The bathroom was behind the times and it had been decorated in 60-70's (?) style - brown color (this includes sinks - should have mentioned that as a positive it had a double sink vanity - the toilet, the bathtub). This is not the hotel's fault however, there was a crane installed on a property nearby that obstructed the view of the Matterhorn. The hotel is at the top of a hill and it was pretty difficult to reach with large backpacks - one you check-in you are provided with a card that accesses a lift that leads straight to the main street.

This property is located uphill in the city of Zermatt and walking up to the hotel is somewhat hard. The hotel provided a free shuttle from and to the train station which was very helpful. Our room had a direct view of Matterhorn peak which was a plus. Breakfast was great too.

The view from the balcony is stunning to see the Matterhorn. All staff had brilliant service specially Monica and Daniella. Beyond their service, I was at the room my wife went to town centre and lost it back to hotel and had a tripped, she sent me me a message her whereabout but run out of battery. difficult to understand the message of my wife. I couldn't find her, and I went back to hotel and asked to Monica, and she's about to finished her duty, we went together she said do not worry we can find her even your gave a wrong spot. brilliant we found my wife. when we check out I have to leave early in the morning drive to Venice, Monica prepared me a pack of breakfast and gave me some 3 souvenir items from hotel for free. it was wonderful experience. thanks all the staff.

The hotel is excellent. There is elevator to the ground. Perfect location, 1 minute walking to Sunnegga station, 5 minutes walking to Zermatt train station and has bus directly to glacier paradise. Very clean. We have Mountain View room so watching Matterhorn sunrise is a plus.

I loved this hotel, not least because of its links to the history of Zermatt and conquering the Matterhorn. We had an amazing view of the Matterhorn from our balcony and bed. I spent hours just sitting staring at the mountain. Loads of choice for breakfast, and food was available in the evening - not a full restaurant, but enough for what we were looking for. They also had plenty of choice of non-alcoholic beer as hubby is a non-drinker. The staff were amazing, and really friendly. The hotel was a little further out of town than we realised, but there was a lift and tunnel that meant we didn't have to walk up the hill too often. The hotel offers a taxi service to / from Zermatt station so don't make the same mistake as us and pay for a taxi!

Wonderful staff. Great breakfast. Great view of the Matterhorn. Elevator access to river level makes its easy to get into town.

Good hotel and value. They will pick you up from the train. View of The Matterhorn is great, even with the crane in front due to construction. Rooms are a good size, pool is good. Breakfast is ok and the staff is tremendous.

Excellent stay in Zermatt

We enjoyed our stay. The staff are very friendly and helpful and the rooms comfortable (if a bit dated). Great location. It’s about a 2 minute walk to an elevator which takes you to down to the Sunnega funicular railway. You can ski back to the same point. Getting in to town is also easy. They have an arrangement with the hotel across the road to use their elevator which takes you down to very close to the town centre. Using this lift, you can walk to the main street in about 10 minutes. They will pick you up & drop you at the station when you arrive/depart as long as you arrive before 7pm. Breakfast is a buffet with a good selection of cereals, breads, cheeses, cold meats, juices, yoghurt, etc. There is bacon and scrambled egg, and a machine to boil eggs should you wish. The hotel across the road (Schönegg) has a great indoor bar, terrace bar with fabulous Matterhorn view, and a very good restaurant (if you watched The Night Manager, it’s where Olivia Coleman met with Tom Hiddlestone). Some rooms have baths, some just showers. The “toiletries” they provide are very basic. A hand soap dispenser and a shampoo dispenser. I’d also recommend you bring your own hairdryer if you need one as the one provided isn’t great. Zermatt is an expensive resort and you get what you pay for. I thought this hotel was excellent considering its price point. I’d happily go back.
