Turbot House Hotel

We only chose this place because Brisbane’s housing crisis is pushing hotel prices through the roof. Turbot House is really bare minimum. The staff are polite rather than overly friendly, not introducing themselves without prompting, and certainly not bestirring themselves to offer anything unless asked. Presumably they are just students or backpackers filling in time until they can find a better job. The building dates from 1916, and it shows. Our room had a sign in the bathroom “Please keep the bathroom door closed when showering as the steam can set off the fire alarm - and it’s arrival will be at your (the guest’s) cost.” Here’s an idea - why not install a ceiling fan, as any other hotel would have done, so as to avoid the risk of this event occurring? Yes, as a 1916 building, you may have a heritage exemption that allows you not to do so, but how does that serve your customers? We found 5 cockroaches over the time we were staying, but didn’t mention it because the previous hotel we had stayed in had 7 cockroaches (so this was an improvement), and because the room was so small it was hard to imagine how it could be cleaned effectively anyhow. The room was so small that we could not fit a suitcase on the far side of the bed, and nor could the inbuilt cupboard open any further then about 45 degrees before it hit the bed. We needed to run the air conditioner almost continuously to maintain a comfortable temperature. The bed itself was comfortable.

Easy walking distance to train station. Close to CBD. Check in was not a problem. Shops nearby.

Honestly, it was one of the worst hotels I have ever stayed in. I get that its small and its cheap, but basically cleaniliness was 0. Shower curtains were too small, so water went every where in the bathroom. Bodysoap was empty. Spider webs everywhere. The double bed was literally a double bed(2 beds put together). Aircon was so dirty and blowing dust everywhere. Booked 2 nights, but checked out after the first night, as I couldnt stand it any longer

Wet Walls, Broken Cupboard, Toilet Would Not Flush As Cistern Was Always Empty Due To Leak, TV Could Not Pick Up Channel 7, Channel 9 Suffered Interference, No Ventilation In Room Had To Use Air Conditioner Continuously, Building Has Dropped In Rear Corner As All Doors Do Not Fit Correctly (2" in my room ALONE 108). HAVE DETAILED PICTURES TO PROVE ALL OF THIS

This place was dirty and smelly. There was even someone's phone number written in permanent marker on the bathroom wall!! We ended up not staying. It pays to read the reviews. Unfortunately, we didn't take the time to see just how bad the reviews were. If we had, we would not have booked. The staff did their best to accommodate us as I have mobility issues and the hotel is not wheelchair or mobility friendly. However, there were no other suitable rooms. Unfortunately, the room allocated to us was not safe or suitable for me to stay and we forfeited our booking and just drove home.
