What a fantastic hotel , so peaceful, room was excellent, with great facilities. The restaurant was well laid out with plenty of room and the food was incredible. We sat outside with coffee one morning and the view is stunning .

"More than a hotel, a perfect experience"

10.0

Absolutely amazing 3-night stay at Hyll near Chipping Campden. Incredibly designed and thought out interior, set on a beautiful estate, with a mission and ethos based on 'doing nothing'. Clearly lots of attention on the little details, from the amenities in the room to the books and layout of the 3 lounges you can relax in. The staff were amazing; attentive and going above and beyond to make your stay feel special. Although the staff were always around, they blended in with the hotel, making the experience feel like you had a whole manor house to yourself whilst also being looked after. Half the rooms are in the manor house itself, and the other half are in 'cottages' attached to the manor. I don't think it matters which you stay in. We were in the cottages and loved our room. The hotel is newly renovated and a couple of the areas are still being finished. This was being completed very discreetly and was no bother at all. A perfect experience, excited to see how this place evolves and visit again soon.

"Beautifully decorated new gem"

8.0

I chose Hyll for a night away to celebrate my husbands birthday. We received a warm welcome coming in from a cold & wet day. Our room was delightfully warm & cosy - we loved our bed & bedding so much we ordered a set of sheets & pillowcases when we got home ! The walk from the main part of the hotel to our room was slightly let down by walking through a few corridors of unrenovated spaces, but we know the hotel is new so we understood. We spent the first part of the evening in one of the sitting rooms. The sitting rooms are all lovely and refined, but they are all small as in it feels like someone’s actual living room in size and not hotel sized. We struggled to see if the hotel was full where everyone would fit ? I think there is 27 rooms and there are 6 sofas and some armchairs scattered around - doesn’t seem enough ? But maybe there are more public spaces planned. We chose cocktails and settled in for a chat. Durning that time an elderly couple came in and sat in chairs reading books as I said the rooms are home sized living rooms so it was like sharing the space very intimately with strangers reading and we felt a bit uncomfortable… so we departed to another sitting room and would have enjoyed putting on some records on the turntable but it didn’t work. After freshening up we headed to the restaurant. I did ask to change tables as there are spotlights directly above you and it was absolutely blinding. I just couldn’t have sat there at all - total ambience killer, so moved to a darker spot. Dinner was fantastic we really enjoyed the food. Amazing nights sleep and great breakfast. So a couple of issues but nothing too deterring ! It wouldn’t stop us from staying again or recommending it to friends.

"Falling short on basics"

6.0

Have been coming here for a few years and loved it but this was the first time since the rebranding and refurbishment and I fear it is now trying to be too cool for its own good and failing on some of the basics of good hospitality. Check-in was rather odd - my partner had to give his name, address, car reg, bank card number, card expiry date and security code out loud to the young woman on reception before she would show us to the room, despite the fact that the reservation had been made a number of weeks previously. We had a garden room. It was clear that the decoration of the room was incomplete - the french windows to the garden were covered in splatters of dried plaster and the wooden frames obviously had not been decorated for some time. The terrace outside was cordoned off with parking cones and tape because there were workmen still laying turf in the garden. There was a cupboard with a rail and coathangers but there was nowhere else to store clothing - the room badly needs a chest of drawers. As a result we lived out of two suitcases for 4 nights because there was absolutely nowhere to put items such as underwear, socks, t-shirts, jumpers etc. The washbasin in the bathroom was tiny - it's the sort of size you'd have in your downstairs loo for handwashing but it is far too small for a bathroom. As a result you could not wash your face/shave without splashing all over the floor. We were continually having to mop up with the bathmat, which became sodden. It is perfectly possible to have something which ticks both the aesthetic and practicality boxes but the washbasin was attractive to look at but wholly unfit for purpose. There was nowhere to hang anything in the bathroom. There was a small heated towel rail which wasn't big enough to accommodate two damp bath towels and so one towel had to be draped over the radiator in the bedroom. I am afraid you do not pay the best part of £400 per night and expect to put up with that sort of thing. The hotel has been redesigned and refurbished and these are the sort of basic things which should have been considered. I suspect too much attention has been given to being cool and stylish and practicalities have been ignored. On the second day we had to go to reception to ask for more loo roll because it had not been replenished. Other reviews have commented adversely about the earth-toned decor throughout - I actually quite liked it, it is quite soothing up to a point, but I think it could be relieved by splashes of colour here and there to mitigate the paper bag effect. The staff are generally good - friendly and helpful without being intrusive (apart from the receptionist) - and it was nice to see some staff members who have been there since we first started staying. It seemed, however, that they were very much under the cosh and somewhat stressed and trying to do their best under pressure. One member of the team did say that they were short-staffed. We enjoyed the food, especially the breakfasts. Building work is still going on - they are building an "events barn" accommodating up to 150 people. I would not want to stay if there was an "event" happening and I would hope that the diary is organised so that "events" do not coincide with the bookings of guests seeking a tranquil stay. The hotel is in a beautiful building in a beautiful location and we really wanted to like it in its fresh incarnation, but I am afraid it is currently falling short on the fundamentals of a comfortable stay and on that basis I do not think it offers fair value for the prices charged. It may be cool to have a record player and vinyl in the lounge area but it is not cool to have to deal with soggy towels and nowhere to put your stuff.

"Beautiful venue but still a way to go...."

6.0

Aesthetically beautiful with great attention to detail where the decor is concerned. The dim lighting is moody and flattering. Beds are extremely comfortable and touches like the goodies drawer, Dyson hairdryer and clothes steamer are noticed. That being said, this hotel still has some work to do.... The staff are delightful and polite but almost so discreet that you wonder where they are at times. It feels understaffed which has repercussions on the service levels. During the evening meal it felt like there was a shortage in the kitchen which had knock on effects for the waiting staff and during breakfast, the poor team were running around like headless chickens continually apologising for the wait. Great team...just hire more of them to create the well oiled machine which is needed to make this place work. The food was average. There was a limited but adequate menu which made me think the dishes would be superb but in reality that was not the case. The scallops were okay, lacking in any real flavour but the lamb dish was pleasant. Fine to do a limited menu but then every dish MUST be excellent! All that being said, the hotel weirdly feels like it is trying too hard almost. To be cool, hip, super relaxing, different but still not either quite knowing how to achieve this or still not there quite yet. I could not decide which. It's got legs definitely, but is still wobbling in flats at the moment....it needs to find its heels and walk tall and confident. Good luck to them, really wish the team the best.

"A demographic shift is underway - which side are you?"

10.0

We had a fantastic stay at HYLL, but we were aware that some other guests had a slightly different experience. We stayed for four nights in a Manor room and found it to be the most relaxing place we have stayed at for some time. The staff were so friendly and attentive, the food is delicious (if a little limited on the main menu, but only having 2 meals there it was OK) and the place is beautiful. A top notch Sunday roast greeted us and the breakfasts were delicious. Details like the artwork and books create a wonderful ambiance, and being there at the beginning of fire season didn’t harm the sense of hygge (I wonder what that means in Welsh - see the review below for that to make sense…). The hotel is beautifully designed and very comfortable and we would certainly return. There does seem to be a demographic shift underway given the recent update of the property and, luckily, we are on the side of the change which appreciates the more contemporary feel of the place which is emerging. The owners clearly have exciting plans for the hotel, and we hope that all their hard work (and money) doesn’t undermine the intrinsic calm and peace of the place - it is something special.

Food, staff, location all good. Room emphasised image not practical needs. Name change lamentable, Charingworth Manor is recorded in the Domesday book. Retribution. Hull means UGLY in Welsh.

"Loved our stay!!"

10.0

We have had the most wonderful weekend at this superb gem of a hotel. It is comfortable, relaxing, beautifully furnished and the staff are excellent. Nothing is too much for them. The sophisticated yet funky feel of the restaurant is matched by its delicious food. A wonderful nights sleep in the most comfortable bed ever - we liked it so much we couldn’t get out of it so ordered breakfast in bed! Thank you Hyll for giving us the best time. We will be back!

"An absolute gem."

10.0

The driveway up to the hotel gives you some idea of what is to come - surrounded by 60 acres so beautiful with the autumn colours. The house is stunning - we received a warm welcome and our room (4) was comfort personified. A separate lounge with tv and well stocked bar and comfy sofa. All tastefully decorated. Large bathroom with excellent toiletries and a fabulous super king bed. The grounds are a delight to explore and it’s worth a visit to nearby Chipping Camden - Miss Marple meets Midsummer Murders sort of vibe. We dined in the restaurant in the evening and the food was out of this world as was breakfast the following morning. The staff are at the top of their game - friendly and helpful, they really want you to have a good time. The various lounges are comfortable and the vinyl room with the record player a lovely quirk. The WhatsApp system For contacting the staff worked brilliantly and we received almost instant responses. We just felt looked after and the sense of quiet and relaxation was something special. The only downside was having to leave. A proper treat.
