DoubleTree by Hilton Dulles Airport-Sterling

I cannot believe we paid $600 for 2 nights here. The first thing we noticed was the worn and dated carpeting in the hallway before reaching our room. (photo). Upon opening the door to our room (which was on the "Executive" floor - level 6), the next thing we noticed was the odor. Despite being frigid, it smelled like some bad combination of BO, dampness, and your great grandma's too-strong perfume. We hoped it would dissipate, but it had nothing to do with the last occupant - that's just the smell the room had. Maybe it was from the carpeting that appeared to be from the 1980s? Maybe it was the dingy duvets? The bathroom was teeny - only one person could fit (photos). There was one tiny towel rack to hang two hand towels (And believe me, that's all they gave us - two thin hand towels and two thin bath towels, no extras of anything), but a bath towel would've dragged on the floor, so essentially no towel racks, one sink, no shelves (teeny one in the shower that barely held two travel bottles) or cabinets to put anything. Opening the door took up the entire bathroom - nobody could be in front of the vanity and with the door open (sort of needed, because there was zero ventilation, no fan), nobody could possibly enter or exit the shower. I requested hypoallergenic (nonfeather) pillows and never received them. Hours later, went n person again, and requested again and desk person (people at the desk were all quite lovely) seemed surprised we hadn't gotten them, and went himself to find them and came back with what felt like two bricks. Worst pillows I've ever had anywhere. I woke up each morning with red eyes, a rash and unable to breathe (whatever that smell was is surely an indicator of a bigger problem in that room) - it went away each day after I left the hotel for a couple of hours. There was no a/c in the hallway, despite a 90+ degree day, and there was literally water dripping steadily from the ceiling in the lounge on the 6th floor (photo) despite the fact that it hadn't rained while we were there - it looked like the ceiling was about to give way. There was trash piled in there, as well (photo at 10 in the AM, so business hours, not early AM or late night!) and the lampshade next to the elevator was worn and cracked (photo). This is exactly how the whole hotel felt. Spend whatever you need to spend to stay literally anywhere else. I cannot believe that Hilton puts its name on this facility.

In my room, I had difficulty with the door, which could have been because of the heat and humidity, causing it to swell and making it difficult to open. Also, the room had a funky smell. Lastly, I went down to breakfast, and many in the dining room thought it was free and then as we started eating a woman came around to say there was a charge. What are you supposed to do as you are already eating? There should have been someone right by the entrance to the buffet saying you will be charged $19.

The facility had great staff from the front desk to the bar. Would have liked to seen a clock in the workout center and cups for water. The door took seven tries before it opened and other quest had the same problem.The pool and sauna were refreshing. Unfortunately the business center had computers but were not working for 2 days. Left my computer at home. Would like to see in future non alcoholic beer.

Desk staff and Bartender were amazing.

The room was underwhelming as was the quality of service and amenities. The shuttle service to/from airport has to be requested in advance and does not operate after 10pm apparently. So I had to uber to the hotel.

The pool was filthy. The jacuzzi was not working. Staff was friendly and courteous. VERY disappointed in the condition of the pool and jacuzzi.

Hotel was clean, peaceful and close to restaurants, shopping, and entertainment. Our family enjoyed our stay.

This property is not my favorite. It’s beautiful on the outside, easy to park, good location if you’re going to be traveling around various parts of northern VA but there are issues. On Expedia it was advertised that this property had laundry facilities which we were counting on and we learned they have none for guests. The property also has an indoor pool which the kids were excited about and it was closed for maintenance the entire time we were there with seemingly no work being done on it, just closed. The restaurant was not great at the hotel and is really pricey. The room was a good size and seems to be sound proof which was a strong point and the gym is small but a great mix of everything to keep you fit while traveling.
