"Hotel Good, Expedia Bad"

8.0

On arrival at The Red Lion, Lacock, Chippenham, we were told they were full and our room was actually at The George Inn, some 400yds down the road. This meant we had to walk back to the Red Lion for breakfast in the morning as The George Inn only has two room and doesn't serve breakfast. Thank goodness it wasn't raining. Absolutely infuriating and totally dishonest of Expedia. We will never use them again. It's a pity. We've stayed at The Red Lion before, and it's a charming old inn with fantastic food and glorious breakfasts, which is why we booked there again. Our confirmation email clearly stated our booking was at The Red Lion, with the correct address but, on another page, it said "Double room en suite (George Inn) free breakfast" It didn't give the address or and other details of The George. Apparently Expedia keep doing this to people who book to stay at the Red Lion and the man who manages both inns is understandably annoyed and frustrated about it. As it turned out, The George Inn is equally lovely with an interesting history, and our room was beautifully appointed. We enjoyed a superb dinner at The George that night, with a free bottle of wine as a concillatory gesture from the manager. Poor man, he was very apologetic. but why should his profits be down because Expedia can't get its act together?

"Room was in The George Inn, 5 min away but nicer"

10.0

Although some rooms show up under Red Lion (The George Inn), it wasn't clear in my booking email or check in instructions which room we'd booked and I couldn't check on booking history. It's not clear that the Red Lion and The George are under the same management and same booking process and the Red Lion is also refurbishing some rooms and seems a number of people are turning up at the wrong place. That said, we preferred The George! The rooms are only 6 months old, spotless and incredibly comfortable to sleep in. The George has parts up to 650 years old, is owned by the National Trust and has the 'Dog Wheel' - a must see feature! Also the cosier of the two. The Red Lion's bigger, livelier and also historic. Other small but annoying problems, breakfast in the week finishes at a miserly 9 am despite being in a tourism driven village and is also only served at the Red Lion...a cost cutting too far, especially in Winter and Spring rainy days. Room cleaner arrived 5 minutes before checkout too (also too early at 10.30, though 11 or 11.30 would be OK).

"Good location"

6.0

Having stayed at this hotel twice before it was the worst room - over the kitchen and often smelt of fried food and very noisy in the evening when whoever was staying above my room (I presume staff) came in stomping around and there shower was very noisy. The breakfast was very average the menu doesn’t change.l will consider booking another hotel next time I need to be in Lacock.

"Wonderful hotel in a great location."

10.0

We stayed in a superior double room overlooking the High Street, the perfect spot to watch the world go by. The room was lovely & comfortable with great facilities. The bar & restaurant areas are cosy & comfortable with a wonderful real fire & very friendly & helpful staff. Breakfast was great, especially the Wiltshire traditional English. The menu offers a good selection for lunch & dinner - the Sunday roast dinner was superb! The Red Lion is charming, cosy & welcoming, a perfect place to stay, in the heart of the beautiful village of Lacock.

"Excellent position in unique village."

10.0

Our room was charming. It was warm, spacious and tastefully decorated with a lovely view of the village. Just a word of warning, the floors are very uneven due to the age of the property which means that the furniture is not level and things placed on the tables may slide off, we had a couple of near misses! The staff were very friendly and the cooked breakfast was huge! A great find!

"Well worth a visit."

A lovely old hotel in a beautiful village. Breakfast waitress a full of information about the village and rightly proud of it. Room clean but public areas could do with a lick of paint.

"Great location for a visit to Lacock"

8.0

So pleased to find free parking right in the centre of the village. We received a lovely welcome and were shown to our room...nice touch. A revamped, large room in an old pub. Could only hear music etc until about 11pm then very quiet, just as Nicola promised. Good quality tea, biscuits, toiletries, nice bed and pillows. Excellent, large meal and very pleasant staff. The village is pricey but possibly because they are all paying rent to the National Trust. Lovely for one night visit.
