The location was perfect, right downtown Sydney. Very friendly owner and very comfy bed. Nice clean bathroom and the price was great too. We will be back!

"it was fine, the property is quite nice."

the breakfast was not delicious. the proprietor was a little unpredictable. At first she seemed to be hiding from guests but later she was more friendly. I read on line reviews after I was there and saw there were many comments about the owner. She was very fussy. I actually washed the slippers that were provided and left them in a bag with my room number on them. i don't mind using her slippers but didn't wish to share them - they were removed from the bag and put back in the general pile so I had to take them with me.

while there are a couple of instruments, the guests are really not encouraged to play them because there is always music playing in the entry room - even when I arrived some time well after mid-night. I asked about it and was told to take the guitar to my room but there's tons of stairs so I didn't bother with that or the piano

"Acrid, Hostile Behaviour, Unwanted & Unnecessary."

Undeniably a lovely old building with rich history, ambiance. Beautifully maintained and impressively (if not somewhat oddly) decorated. Excellent for day-trips to Fortress of Louisbourg and the Glace Bay Miner's Museum. Downtown Sydney is right there-the ocean promenade, restaurants and shops and services close by, coffee shops, grocery stores, a theatre / cultural arts performance space, heritage buildings, festivals, etc...

I strongly advise those considering choosing this premises to READ the 'poor' reviews very closely, and take them seriously. especially ones posted recently, plus August and July '25. Not only booking.com-but Expedia and Tripadvisor as well. Read the poor reviews; an unsettling pattern is evident. On the card with door-code # it is written: this code is for your door AS WELL as the front door. The first time I left the building, in search of a meal, I entered the code as described, and the door locked. I tried it. I continued with this same process for entering and exiting both the entrance to the building, and the suite I had booked. On my 2nd day, exiting the building, the door would not lock. There was no way I was going to leave it unlocked. I asked the woman (Carmen?) for assistance and she YELLED in my face (that is absolutely accurate: Yelled) 'I AM VERY BUSY! I DON'T HAVE TIME TO TALK TO YOU! I HAVE LOTS OF WORK TO DO!' I was FLOORED. I could not believe this woman's behaviour. I was EXTREMELY put-off by her total lack of self-control and courtesy. She then made this gesture to prove that all one had to do was simply touch the keypad and the door would lock. She indicated that a note inside explains this. But the note itself is TINY and easily missed! Besides-it says on the card given to guests with room entry code 'the same code for suite and FRONT DOOR to lock and unlock'. She then shouted at me: 'Go On Your Way!' I have friends and family about to visit Sydney & Cape Breton. I was asked to recommend lodgings. I advised them to NOT book at The Royal. Yes, guests can be unreasonable and difficult, and yes running the hotel is incredibly taxing-but 'lose it' on valued guests (such as myself) and there are consequences. Absolutely beyond belief.
