Clean, friendly staff, good restaurant. Very nice buildings. Quiet at night, which was important as we had to keep the windows open due to the heat.

It was 30+ degrees and the towel rail was on as was the radiator when we arrived. You could turn the radiator off, but not the towel rail. Only discovered this when we returned in the evening.

"Jacuzzi"

6.0

Swimming pool in the spa

Jacuzzi was weak, not many jets. Asked for vegan sausage which we got but couldn't eat it as it was obviously cooked in microwave and it was hard.

"Beautiful building, very pleasant and good location to visit York"

9.0

Location, all facilities and good food. Pleasant and accommodating staff Nice outdoor terrace at the quiet site. Good starting point (nearby bus stop or Park & Ride] for a day trip to York.

The single beds are a bit on the narrow side, at least not as wide as other beds we slept in during our recent holidays. Logging onto WIFI is somewhat cumbersome, it maybe a legal requirement or has a commercial reason! As a foreigner I could not login as only UK-postal codes were accepted. Actually used hotelโ€™s PC.

"Pleasant stay in comfortable well-located hotel marred by hostility of receptionist"

7.0

Spacious room, comfortable bed, fittings a bit dated but ok. Old stone building that stayed quite cool despite hot days. Good choice at breakfast and well organised despite being very busy (Whitsun weekend). Very quiet, secluded setting and good location near to York and main roads, ample parking. good meal in Fat Abbot (attached restaurant) on the Sat evening with excellent service.

Very poor start to my stay. I arrived at 1pm after a long drive (check-in is at 2pm) with the intention of having a bar snack while I waited for room to be ready. The receptionist was dealing with other guests, looked at me but didn't acknowledge me at all. When she finally turned to me I gave my name and she said 'Well you can do the paperwork but check-in is at 2pm'. I said that I was going to have something to eat while I waited. She was extremely hostile. another staff member appeared, welcomed me warmly, checked to see if my room was ready and said I could leave my bags there and come back for some food. The receptionist then said aggressively 'So long as you don't think it's set a precedent for early check-in for future visits'. To which I replied that based on the experience so far I was unlikely to ever be coming back!
