Durrant House Hotel

Had it not been for the wonderful staff in this place, the score would have been lower. This is a beautiful hotel but it looks rather neglected and sad. The grand frontage of the building is let down by flaky paintwork and dead flowers. Our room was clean and basic but reminiscent of a Premier Inn room and all the character that must have been in it was all gone. The outdoor pool looked sad al. We had an evening meal at the bar and breakfast and the food was excellent. The eggs were amazing from a local farm and you could adapt the menu to your own preference. Thank you chef! It was the staff who actually made our stay at this hotel. Michelle Jones used to be the manager there and is now one of waiting staff. She was amazing and welcomed us openly. I watched her glide around the room being attentive and helpful with other guests and nothing was too much trouble for her. It was evident that Michelle is really proud of the place she works and even offered to take us on a tour of the building. Sadly we didn't have time but would have looked around, especially the original building. Anthony on reception was lovely too and made me laugh. He could not help enough. Sorry I don't know your names, but the night warden, bar man, gardener and the Irish beautician were also very friendly and helpful. Thank you Michelle, Anthony and team. It was lovely to meet you. This was a lovely place to stay and to the owners/management, I hope you know what an amazing team you have but your building does need a little TLC

A return visit for a group of 12 friends for the Motown Weekend The refurbished rooms we were promised when booking last year did not materialise. The Venetian Room is run with military precision serving delicious food by happy staff. The same cannot be said for the front of house and bar staff. A customer does not wish to be greeted by miserable moaning sullen staff which is the same as last year. A smile and a kind word is not too much to ask for. Throughout the weekend there were continued issues with ice- should we pay or not with staff offering different lame excuses. We even resorted to buying ice from Apppledore and £2.00 bags of ice from reception! The receptionist even had the audacity to say"if I buy a drink ice will be given" to which I retorted " we had been in the bar for 4 hours spending a substantial amount of money". HR your staff need training urgently. The music was off the richter scale, a shout out to Gamal John & Diana Ross tribute. A must for any Motown follower Disa

Mix-up with evening meal, my wife is coeliac: gluten free. No compensation offered, i.e. a glass of wine, for losing half her meal!
