"Magnifique, merveilleux, inoubliable."

10.0

"Best adventure for a family"

10.0

Our family of 4 included two kids, aged 10 & 12. We stayed for 4 nights, with one night spent camping out in the jungle with a guide. We enjoyed the trek to the bat cave for a day trip, got massages on our own balcony, enjoyed the restaurant on site, and loved the beauty and comfort of the bungalows. But by far, the most magical, memorable and amazing part of the trip was our overnight trek into the national park to see the wildlife. We had the BEST GUIDES! They knew about all the flora and fauna, and built wonderful relationships with our kids. We were blessed to have personal, long-lasting interactions with nearly a dozen individual orangutans, mostly mothers with babies and youngsters. We saw a family of white-handed gibbons, several Thomas Leaf monkeys, pig-tailed macaques, and silver monkeys. Our guides helped us to respectfully view all the wildlife for an optimal experience. Our guides cooked wonderful meals and snacks for us at every stop. We were never lacking for anything! We stayed near a river where the kids could jump from a small cliff and met many friends, both local children from the village and new friends from around the world. The next morning, after a beautiful breakfast, we rode rafts down the rapids for an adventure. We recommend this for anyone who enjoys nature, animals, and supporting a critical ecosystem on the brink.

"Amazing Stay – Orangutans, Nature & Great People"

10.0

We had an amazing stay at Bungalows on the Rocks in Bukit Lawang. The highlight of our trip was the jungle trek, an unforgettable experience where we were lucky enough to see orangutans in the wild. It was truly surreal. The guides were fantastic from start to finish. They were knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely cared about making sure we had a great time. They treated us with so much kindness and made the whole experience feel safe, relaxed, and enjoyable. The bungalows themselves are set in a beautiful, peaceful spot surrounded by nature, which made it the perfect place to unwind after the trek. If you’re looking for an authentic jungle experience with great people and unforgettable wildlife encounters, this is the place to stay. Highly recommend! Thank you! Matias.

"Bucket list must-do!"

10.0

Amazing way to experience orangutan trekking! The bungalows and tucked away into to trees waaay up on the hillside. Once you arrive in town, there’s a rope bridge and about 250 steps up to the lodge. Highly recommend you pay the “porters” to carry your bags. We are active 60-year olds and managed well, but the steps are no joke. The private rooms are rustic, clean, spacious and have great AC! The overnight trek was a fun way to go deeper into the jungle-some challenging sections (including “ropes and roots” to descend for the last hour—also no joke!), but very rewarding to find so many orangutans and monkeys along the way. We enjoyed our riverside dinner and breakfast, prepared by our guides. The tents were rustic (set on platforms)- not very private but you do get your own screened-in mattress. You’ll need a (lightly packed) daypack with a towel and water shoes for the overnight stay. Food at the main lodge and during the trek was basic but good. We enjoyed our cooking class and onsite massages!

"A highlight experience!!"

10.0

The communication pre- trip was prompt and easy. We were picked up at the airport and drove to the resort. Note it is a bit of a hike from drop off to the resort- you walk across a rope bridge then climb over 200 steps to the hotel- but it is worth the hike! The bungalows are basic but clean and you truly feel that you are in a treehouse in the jungle. The staff were pleasant and accommodating and the food was tasty. We did the overnight trek which was a highlight for sure! We saw so many monkeys and observed many orangutans close up in the trees- magical! The hike is challenging with a long rope descent to the base camp by the river. We also loved the tube ride back to the main resort the next morning! This was definitely a bucket list destination for us!

"A little piece of paradise"

10.0

We’ve been staying at On The Rocks for more than ten years and it just keeps getting better. Wawan and his team are fabulous, kind, hardworking, and full of heart. When I visited last year, they had just had an electrical fire that destroyed the restaurant. Within five days they had already created a temporary dining space, brought in local cooks, and somehow still managed to make every meal feel special. That kind of effort says everything about the people who run this place. Now the restaurant has been completely rebuilt and it’s beautiful. You can see the pride in every detail. The food is excellent, the view is magic, and the whole place has a calm, welcoming energy. What I love most is their commitment to doing things the right way, protecting the land, keeping things sustainable, and working only with ethical guides who never feed or disturb wildlife. It’s exactly how it should be done. The rooms are lovely, with that perfect mix of comfort and a touch of luxury with air conditioning, clean, and peaceful. After all these years, On The Rocks still feels like a little haven. I can’t recommend it highly enough.
