We came here for our honeymoon and had an absolutely AMAZING experience. Our treks, especially our over-night trek were spectacular. The hiking is no joke! But so worth it. Riding an inner tube along the river was so much fun. I wish everyone I know could have that experience. We stayed in two of the bungalows and each was crafted beautifully and had views that were just magic. The food was good and we loved the coffee. Thank you to our guides, Supri and Ipol, and to the whole On the Rocks staff! After our stay at On the Rocks, we traveled to Borneo to stay at Sukau Lodge to spot orangutans - that place is fancyyyy and we really enjoyed it but On the Rocks was the highlight of our trip. We spent much of our time in Borneo discussing how much we loved our experience in Sumatra. I will say that if you have any mobility issues, you may struggle with the many stairs leading to the lodge from the village.

This place was amazing! Up in the jungle, away from the noise. Saw orangutans not long after checking in. Although you do see more on a jungle trek - which the lovely staff are able to organize for you. Pack light as there are quite a few stairs to climb to get to the bungalows but definitely worth it. Friendly staff, great food and great location.

The location is amazing - right at the jungle edge. The staff were 5 star - really looked after us and always with a huge smile on their face. This was a five star adventure experience. We travelled as two couples and one of the rooms did not have hot water - but this really isn’t an issue - the water was tepid and hey you are in the jungle. There is a 300 step climb to the hotel but a bunch of young strong porters met us at the taxi and carried our bags on the 10 minute walk followed by the 300 steps. Tip them well - they are worth it and again all done with a smile on their face! Really can’t speak highly enough of all the staff. The hotel in the most beautiful setting and the communal area is a relaxing place to chill out. We took the jungle trek from here. Our guides were kind, considerate and caring. They found us Orang Utans, Thomas monkeys, silver leaf monkeys, chameleons and even a white gibbon. They prepared us fruit platter snacks and lunch of Nasi Goreng was served on a log in the jungle - FABULOUS! If it’s a five star luxury holiday you crave this probably isn’t for you but if you are looking for a five star adventure and an authentic jungle stay with all the quirks this brings then THIS IS THE PLACE. Communication with the property prior to arrival is excellent, they organise anything you need with little fuss (or cost) and really can’t go enough to help you. Cant recommend highly enough!

Nothing to dislike

THIS TRIP WAS AMAZING. Staying here was a dream. The food was great and easy on our stomachs. Our overnight tour was INCREDIBLE and so worth it. We stayed in at a camp site near a waterfall. Our guide Sepri Encek was so kind and helped us to spot animals away from your groups. Agus prepared our jungle dinner and helped us to raft. We loved them both. On the Rocks helped us book a day tour with Ipol who was perfect at looking for snakes when he learned we were interested. We would love to come here again. This was AMAZING.

Had a lovely couple of days (3 and 2 nights) at on the rocks. Rooms are okay for what you can get in an environment as Bukit Lawang. The jungle treks were a very nice experience and that was partly because of the enthausiastic staff. Food menu was also very diverse, which was great. Very chill vibe.

If you’re not that mobile, we would not recommend to go because you have to climb 200 stair steps to get to the accomodation.

Great location up on the hill. The staff was amazing, very helpful and friendly. They arranged transport from Medan airport and to Lake toba. The jungle trekking was a wonderful experience. Big thanks to our guide Sepri. He was very knowledgeable and took great care of us. You should not miss the rafting!

Nice huts located on the hill of Bukit lawang. Surroundings are pretty and we did a nice jungle tour booked via on the rocks.

Be aware that the steps up are quite some, and it is further away from the “center” (15 min walk). Sadly the bed was quite bad.. the mattress had a big dent in the middle and was hard.
