This was a much different type of stay from anything else we had done in Japan so far. This is a cozy little room that is above a small bookstore/restaurant. It has a very unique vibe as you pass through the shop and head upstairs to where you'll be staying. It very much reminded me of coming home and living above a shop that your family runs! There's an additional 2 rooms that are rented out, one on the first floor and 2 on the upper. Ours came with a nice balcony view. The location is a bit towards the end of the town but super close to one of the major onsens here. The staff were also great and very friendly, on check in we were given local recommendations and a free drink card to use at the shop, which we did later that night and spent some enjoyable time chatting with the staff!

Since this is a room in a shared space there is a shared toilet down the hall. We did find that the walls were pretty thin so sound from the shop below or street came through easily. This quieted down after 12 when the shop closed. The beds/pillows weren't very comfortable either unfortunately!

Very comfortable and clean room. Having the balcony was nice for fresh air and a view of the street goings-on. Some reviews noted that this was noisy, but we didn't have any issue with that or noise coming from downstairs. I thought the location was quite peaceful overall. At the far end of town from the train, but still very walkable. In a good location, near the ropeway and a couple of onsen. Staff were very friendly, and gave little treats when we saw them. Very good English and welcoming atmosphere. I would recommend this spot for anyone on budget. Didn't have the onsen pass or yukata, but they provided plenty of towels to bring to the onsen if needed.

This is not a private guest house as written in the description, but that's probably just a mis-translation. We did have it as a private room in the upstairs of a bookstore/bar, with another room nearby and a shared toilet down the hall (although both were unoccupied while we were there during the week). Stairs were narrow and quite steep, something to be aware of, but mostly only an issue for us because it was a little difficult for our toddler to walk down them.
