Sakara Gion

Excellent location. Very lovely house, felt characteristically Japanese. Spacious and well provisioned.

Bit old but that was part of the appeal.

Excellent value for money, with plenty of space, and comfortable beds. The area is quiet but there are good restaurants, convenience store and transport are within a few minutes walking distance. The host was very helpful and explained the area to us.

We liked everything

We had a great time at Sakara Gion. The place was comfortable and had all the amenities we needed. It was fun to stay in a historic machiya. It was also in a terrific location for exploring Kyoto on foot, as well as by bus and subway. The host met us at the property and gave us some great recommendations for restaurants that we loved and never would have found by ourselves. Highly recommend this place!

The stairs to the second floor are steep. It worked okay for us but might be difficult for someone with physical limitations. On the other hand, the nice tatami room on the first floor would make a good extra bedroom if access is an issue.

Yuko met us upon arrival and explained the area and all it had to offer. She was so friendly and helpful. The location was great and close to Gion. The bus stop is around the corner and convenient stores and small supermarket all within a short walk. Yuko has created a small home away from home with all the amenities needed to cook breakfast and have a little retreat from all the exploring. It was cool to experience such an old and historic home. The little stream on the corner of the street provided a cool oasis for my kids where they could wade and play!

Unfortunately none of us (family of 4) slept well here. The front room was noisey whenever a car drove past or people were walking and talking. Whoever slept in here was always very tired the next day due to disturbances. The other room was quieter, but was disturbed by a bright exit light at the top of the stairs that shone right through the glass top of the door. This was almost worse than the noise in the front room. None of our family slept well which impacted our time in Kyoto. Everything else at this place was on point, but I’m sad to say that the sleep disruption means we wouldn’t return.

We were greeted in person by the owner, who gave us a map and useful tips for sightseeing around Kyoto. Convenient location in Gion, walking distance from many sights and restaurants, yet located on a quiet street - nice escape from busy Kyoto. Walking distance to subway stops. Traditional house with tatami floors on the ground floor, unique japanese experience. Recommended!
