River Cottage at Old Post Office

Brilliantly placed to explore Hadrian's Wall and Northumberland, River Cottage is a gem. From the thoughtful additional touches to the excellent facilities, we couldn't recommend River Cottage enough. Mychael met us to hand over the cottage and nothing was too much trouble. There were some great touches: plenty of tea, coffee and milk; amazing coffee bean supply; sweet treats and a bottle of wine. This was a welcoming and friendly place to stay with lots of guides to local sites and how to get to them. The accommodation is 2 minutes from the village pub and 5 minutes from the train station, with hourly services to Carlisle and Hexham. We loved our stay and were even given a goodie bag to help on our onwards journey by train for the next part of our holiday. Thank you!

Everything! Such wonderful touches with fresh bread, milk, coffee refills, wine, chocolate and more. Mychael and Lisa were wonderful hosts, even giving us a little snack pack on departure. The cottage is super cute and wonderfully styled. Nothing has been left out in the kitchen and having the outside fire pit was fabulous. Great location to everything.

Mychael the host was more than helpful, and the little extras were a lovely touch. The cottage is quirky and comfortable with sky tv. Which was a bonus! The outdoor space is absolutely stunning! The weather let us down so couldn't nake the most of the outdoor space.but we didn't let that spoil our stay. The pub is just up the road, so nice and handy. We had a lovely relaxed stay and will aim to go back in the nicer weather.

There was nothing that we didn't like, the cottage is like a home from home.

We had such a wonderful stay and honestly couldn’t have asked for better hosts. From the moment we arrived, they were incredibly welcoming and went above and beyond to make our trip special. They were so accommodating with our little cat — even providing a litter tray and treats, which was such a thoughtful touch. They also surprised my husband with a bottle of prosecco for his birthday, which was just so kind and really made the trip feel extra special. The property itself was cosy, comfortable, and had absolutely everything you could need (and more!). It’s clear a lot of care and thought has gone into every detail. One of our favourite parts was the river right next door — so peaceful and the perfect spot to sit and unwind with a drink in the evening. We truly felt looked after the entire time and would highly recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing and memorable stay 💚

Lovely quirky property next to the river, attached to owner’s house, but very private, with your own outside space overlooking the river. Pub 2 mins walk away which had lovely food and station 5 mins away making it an excellent base for discovering Northumberland and North Cumbria either by car or local transport. Lovely treats left by the owners on arrival for both us and the dog which we all thoroughly enjoyed and some treats for our journey home. Would definitely recommend.

Location was great with a beautiful view of the river. All the necessary bits were provided and our stay was very comfortable. Hosts were helpful and made sure to be available for contact.

Not only the location is just stunning, with the river easy to admire from the private terrace, but the inside of the cottage is decorated in an incredibly comfy way, with every little thing you would possibly need accounted for. Also, the hosts were extremely responsive to anything we needed. We didn't have a car but the place is easy enough to get to via train, and the facilities in Bardon Mill (pub, cafe and a little shop) are just enough to not need a car to get to the neighbouring villages. There is also lots to do within walking distance - hikes, Hadrian's walk and the Roman ruins, with a little handy guide left for us in the cottage. We also went stargazing which was great! Would recommend this place to absolutely anyone.
