Berty's Cottage Home Stay

Berty and Hilda are outstandingly kind and helpful hosts. They know Jaffna very, very well and can advise you about everything. They are very happy to book reliable tuk-tuk drivers for you and will ensure that you get a good price. They both love their food and cook wonderful meals. If you have a favourite dish and give them some notice, they will cook it for you. We enjoyed fabulous crab and prawn curries. Hilda's Tamil style Dossas are to die for. Breakfasts served at Berty's Cottage are varied and wonderful. Portion sizes are huge - you will not go hungry. The Cottage is in a quiet residential road which is handy for reaching Nallur temple and other important Jaffna sites. Berty and Hilda go the extra mile - you will be sure to have a great time in Jaffna if you stay with them and they will help you with any problem you might encounter - they sorted out of friend's visa problem and made sure that we would be happy taking the bus to Trincomalee. Our room was spotlessly clean with lots of hanging space and was really spacious with comfortable beds. Berty and Hilda take security very seriously and are great at keeping mosquitoes out of the property.

Nothing really except the lack of a sunny outside place to lounge in. Would have preferred to have a hot shower and to have curtains that could be opened.

Excellent breakfast - Hilda and Berty were able to cater to all my requests and the food was superb. Early starts were accomodated for and everything was prepared and served to a very high quality.

There were a few mosquitoes outside the property at night, which is prevalent in Jaffna. However, none inside and every effort was made to cater to the guest's comfort.

We really enjoyed our stay for four nights at Berty's Cottage. Both Berty and Hilda are delightful hosts who really care about their guests. Nothing was too much trouble. Breakfasts were fantastic as was an evening meal on our last night expertly cooked by Berty and Hilda for us and our driver Jim. The house is immaculate and very clean, as were the linen and towels. Jaffna is an amazing place to visit and staying with Berty and Hilda made our visit perfect.

Fantastic hosts. Gave us lots of advice. Organised our transport. The food was fabulous. They even made an evening meal for us and two other guests. Some of the best food we have had. The rooms were spotless.

Everything is excellent! Berty and Hilda are the most considerate and caring hosts ever. They really go out of their way to make sure you get the most out of your stay in Jaffna. They arranged for a tuk tuk to pick me up from the bus station, they helped me plan my itinerary, they provide a delicious breakfast, they gave me a tasty packed breakfast when I left early to catch a train, etc. etc. the room and bathroom was large, clean and cool I’m really pleased that I chose to stay there and do so again in the future.

I booked this place for my parents and they loved their stay at Berty’s cottage. The owners handled everything easily and the meals were arranged well. They even arranged a tuk tuk for my parents for a reasonable price to go everywhere in Jaffna. My parents were more than satisfied.

Our hosts Berty and Hilda were wonderful. They helped us with our travel plans including making reservations for our express bus to Colombo as we only found out once in Jaffna that the trains no longer run to Colombo !! Breakfast was great -Sri Kankan food.

Hot water and natural light/windows with view of garden in the room would be good. Tuk Tuk drivers had problems finding the address, fortunately we had a phone with local sim so they could call Berty for directions.

Berty Cottages: A Home Stay Like No Other I discovered Berty Cottages through my aunt, though I booked via booking.com. From the moment I arrived, they went above and beyond—ensuring I had a trishaw from the bus station for my early morning arrival. The atmosphere was warm and homely, with casual conversations and complete transparency making the stay feel effortless. They even prepared meals of my choice and offered tea when they noticed I looked tired. Instead of knocking, they sent me a message when breakfast was ready—such thoughtful gestures. The delicious Jaffna food, paired with their incredible hospitality, made it a truly wonderful experience. Berty Cottages is the perfect place for a cozy, homely stay.
